Equipment Loans

The Smith College Libraries lend an assortment of media equipment to current Smith College students, faculty and staff with a valid OneCard. Before some equipment can be borrowed, an annual loan agreement form may need to be completed. Borrowers assume all responsibility for equipment during their loan periods, including replacement or repair costs in the event of theft or damage.

Loan Periods

The standard loan period for digital media equipment and laptops is up to 3 days. Renewals may be approved and depend upon equipment availability. Equipment to be loaned for semester-long coursework is arranged with instructors; once arranged, individual students can check out the equipment at the Central Service Point.

Replacement Cost

In the event that borrowed equipment is not returned or if the returned equipment is damaged, the borrower will be charged the repair fee or replacement cost, which may be assessed proportionately based on the age of the equipment.

Equipment Guidelines

  • Equipment is loaned on a no-cost basis, though fees for losses, damages, and late returns may apply.
  • Equipment should be returned directly to the service point from which it was loaned.
  • Equipment cannot be reserved or renewed by phone. Digital Media equipment may be reservable in advance, depending on inventory. To request, reserve in person at the service point or complete the Digital Support online form.
  • Equipment loans are restricted to members of the Smith College community including currently enrolled students, faculty, and staff as well as Five College/HS students taking a Smith College course. Five College and HS student loans and/or requests beyond typical durations require faculty approval.
  • Course-related loans take priority.
  • Borrowers can request an extension of their equipment loan before the due date by completing the Digital Support online form.
