Equipment Loans

Library requests will pause from June 22 - July 4 and borrowing will pause from June 27 - July 4. For more details, see Pause to Services During Library System Migration.

The Smith College Libraries lend an assortment of media equipment to current Smith College students, faculty and staff with a valid OneCard. Before some equipment can be borrowed, an annual loan agreement form may need to be completed. Borrowers assume all responsibility for equipment during their loan periods, including replacement or repair costs in the event of theft or damage. The “Types of Equipment Table”↓ shows the current equipment offerings at each library on campus.

Loan Periods

The standard loan period for digital media equipment and laptops is up to 3 days. Renewals may be approved and depend upon equipment availability. Equipment to be loaned for semester-long coursework is arranged with instructors; once arranged, individual students can check out the equipment at the Central Service Point.

Replacement Cost

In the event that borrowed equipment is not returned or if the returned equipment is damaged, the borrower will be charged the repair fee or replacement cost, which may be assessed proportionately based on the age of the equipment.

Equipment Guidelines

  • Equipment should be returned directly to the service point from which it was loaned.
  • Equipment cannot be reserved or renewed by phone. Digital Media equipment may be reservable in advance, depending on inventory. To request, reserve in person at the service point or complete the Digital Support online form.
  • Borrowers can request an extension on their equipment due date by completing the Digital Support online form.
  • Overdue fines accrue at $5.00 per hour up to a maximum of $50.00 for loaner laptops.
  • Do not save work on the hard drive of loaner laptops as all work will be deleted upon restart or powering off.

Assistance with Equipment

If an equipment item does not work, please return it and report the problem to the service desk from which the item was loaned. Library staff can provide basic support for equipment but additional computer hardware and software support is available from ITS Service Center 413-585-4487.
