Every year Special Collections staff collaborate with classes from Smith, the Five Colleges, and local community colleges, and we also support groups from area K-12 schools, student organizations, and community members. We look forward to working with you.
Tips for a Successful Instruction Session
- Contact us at least 4 weeks in advance to arrange your Special Collections instruction session. Due to high demand, we reserve our dedicated teaching spaces -- Neilson 303 and 304 -- on a first-come, first-served basis. The instruction calendar fills up quickly so request before the semester begins or early in the semester. Staff will follow up within 5 business days and schedule a planning meeting if necessary. Submitting a request does not automatically reserve the date and time.
- Work with the archivist or curator to establish learning outcomes for the session.
- Attend the session! Your presence conveys the value you place on developing strong research skills, increases classroom engagement, and ensures that students have clarity about course and assignment expectations.
- Actively participate in the session (i.e. interject information, ask questions, encourage students to ask questions).
