These 99 stereoscopic photographs of India were taken by James Ricalton (1844?-1929) between 1891 and 1900 and first printed as stereographs by Underwood and Underwood in 1900. The Rotman set is part of a reprint series, The World Tour, issued by the Keystone View Company between 1923 and 1931. The Rotman stereographs document late 19th-century India, urban and rural, north and south, through images of religious life, as well as art, architecture, landscapes, landmarks, and people.

It is a resource for students and scholars of design, history of dress, material culture, art/literary history, and curatorial practices. Many of the items are donations from Smith College Alumnae.
