For this month’s "What Am I Reading in ScholarWorks", I’d like to spotlight the recent open-access book Medieval Art, Modern Politics, edited by Art Professor Brigitte Buettner and William J. Diebold. In the introduction, they write, “Medieval art was never experienced ‘as is’: it was always mediated to suit the needs of the moment.” This collection of essays explores how medieval art has been appropriated throughout history to serve modern political agendas, and “manufacture historical continuity.” This timely book demonstrates the importance of understanding these dynamics to prevent ignorance from being used as a tool of manipulation. This thought-provoking volume is well worth your attention—enjoy!
