Meanwhile, here on planet Earth, we continue to have much to do to understand and, to the extent possible, mitigate climate change. For this month’s What Am I Reading in ScholarWorks, I want to highlight the unabating, vital research that so many of our Smith scholars devote themselves to. What makes Assistant Professor Mariana Abarca’s paper, “Increasing Temperatures and Heatwave Durations Negatively Affect the Performance of a Dietary Generalist,” so interesting is the attention it brings to the complexity of the problems individual species on this planet face. It’s not just a “single stressor.” Looking at various aspects of a problem, factoring in multiple stressors, may give some insight into what can mitigate some of that stress. It takes intense study and research to do this kind of work. Seems a good time to turn away from the stressor of headline news for a moment and express some gratitude to all of our scholars and researchers (budding and established) who continue to do the hard work that will help us all deal with the realities of climate change. Enjoy!
