Nora Youtz
Tell us your Smith College Libraries Story.
I started working at Neilson in 2023 because it's my favorite study place and I’ve previously loved volunteering at both my public library and middle school library. I feel most at home when surrounded by books, so I was excited to get involved here.
My favorite parts of the job are helping community members access materials, chatting with our amazing staff, and bonding with other student workers, especially over an overflowing book drop at the end of the year (we see you, hard-working Smithies!). My time as a circulation assistant has been incredibly impactful because I feel more confident problem-solving, navigating library databases, and communicating with a diverse set of people. I’ll take these valuable skills with me wherever I go next.
Outside of the Libraries, what are your interests and hobbies?
Outside of the library, I write fiction and poetry and read everything from fantasy to psychological thriller mysteries. I also enjoy drawing, collecting new words, and cooking with my mom. We’re having so much fun exploring new Asian food recipes together!
What is next for you after graduating from Smith?
I'm still exploring options, but I know I want to work at organizations that have something to do with community-building, books, words, or education! My sisters and I hope to publish several novels together, and I’m currently looking at careers in publishing, libraries, government, non-profit, and dictionaries.
If you could impart one piece of advice to incoming first year students, what would it be?
Before buying textbooks for a class, I encourage you to check if Forbes, Neilson, or any of the Five Colleges have them! I’m a big supporter of free access to books and academic resources.
