Lucy O'Brien ‘26

Tell us your Smith College Libraries Story.

I started working at Neilson because my friend (and now roommate of 4 years) had applied for a job here, but by the time she got an interview she'd already accepted a job elsewhere. She recommended me for the job because I'd worked at a library in high school, and I started a few weeks later. I've loved working at Neilson's Central Service Point because you get to see so much of the campus community. No matter when I'm working, I almost always get a chance to chat with a friend, classmate, or professor. I also love being able to see the books that get passed across the desk to see what people are studying or just reading for fun!

Outside of the Libraries, what are your interests and hobbies?

I love to play scrabble, watch TV with my friends, and read — although ironically I can never focus on a good book while I'm at the desk.

What is next for you after graduating from Smith?

I don't know! Do you know? Can you tell me? Can anyone tell me?

If you could impart one piece of advice to incoming first year students, what would it be?

Take advantage of Smith! Do something out of your comfort zone, pick up a new hobby, and hang out with your friends whenever you can. When you're at the finish line, you're always going to wish you had done more.
