Alice Youtz ‘26

Tell us your Smith College Libraries Story.

In my first year, I spent most of my time at Neilson and have always enjoyed studying among the books, especially in the mezzanine. I always loved that libraries held so many resources – many of them free! – including the interlibrary loan system that grants you access to thousands of books within the state. During sophomore year, I applied to work at Neilson circulation because I wanted to help others make the best of the library space and discover all of Smith’s academic resources. My experience in libraries has introduced me to the world of circulation and searching catalogs to find mysterious books, all while growing my own knowledge of the equipment and reading material that Neilson offers. I’ve gotten to work with such amazing, kind people who’ve mentored me and truly emphasized community at Smith. Learning to navigate catalog systems has inspired me to consider pursuing a library career. Some years after graduation, I might consider getting a Library of Science masters degree!

Outside of the Libraries, what are your interests and hobbies?

Outside of studying at the Library, I like to draw and read fantasy. I'm always finding new music to listen to every day, and occasionally I love to bake cookies.

What is next for you after graduating from Smith?

I’m currently pursuing careers in trade book publishing and libraries. I'd love to work in any field related to books!

If you could impart one piece of advice to incoming first year students, what would it be?

Really use campus resources! Neilson Library is amazing and has so many books you can check out for classes. If you want free books, stay attached to as many libraries as you can, including your hometown library (to access online resources), Forbes Library at the edge of campus, and the interlibrary loan system that comes with having a Forbes and Neilson library card.
