Did you know that the first performance of Handel's Julius Caesar in America took place at Smith College on May 14, 1927 and was conducted by Werner Josten, professor of music?

As part of the display, pick up the book and read the collected reviews from the New York Times, Musical America, Musical Courier; New York Evening Telegraph, Boston Evening Transcript, Springfield Union, and Singing, as gathered in Baroque Opera at Smith College, 1926 - 1931: Record of a Pioneer Venture in Music.
This exhibit was inspired by the Smith Shakes production of Julius Caesar, on April 3, April 10, and April 11, 2025, at 7:30 pm in Weinstein Auditorium. Free.
This also celebrates Smith’s 150 Years at the Josten Performing Arts Library.
