In this session, Erin will lead a facilitated discussion with participants to learn about the history of these works of early modern botany, including the first printed herbal intended for the use of small-town doctors in 15th century Europe. Looking beyond the text, participants will learn about the evolution of botanical illustration and the artistic rendering of plants, from woodcuts in Mattioli’s herbal to engravings in Hooke’s Micrographia to lithographs in Sargent’s Silva of North America. After the discussion, participants will be encouraged to explore the books from the Thornton Collection in conversation with handmade papers by contemporary book artists in the MRBC. Limited to 20 participants; pre-registration required. Go to registration form.
