The Smith College Libraries, as well as the Five College Libraries, offer a broad selection of Graphic Novels, Comics, and Manga for Five College users to borrow and read. The materials range from classic superhero comics to modern, recently published works.

In addition to the personal and professional papers of cartoonist Alison Bechdel (Fun Home, Are You My Mother, Dykes to Watch Out For), the Sophia Smith Collection of Women’s History also contains a variety of comics and ‘zines collected and created by people from the 19th century to the present. These include humorous satires of suffragists (and anti-suffragists), comic strips and panels in small-press feminist periodicals, and zines by women and other gender minorities. The Mortimer Rare Book Collections also contains comics, such as the Frankenstein-oriented Destroyer. Anyone interested in these materials is encouraged to visit the Special Collections Reading Room — and bring their cameras!
