Sept.-Dec. 2016 Exhibition: Selected Works by Robin Price
Book Arts Gallery, Neilson Library, level 3

Robin Price—artist, designer, printer, and publisher—will present the annual McGrath Lecture in Book Arts on October 20 at 4 pm in the Smith College Neilson Library Browsing Room. A reception will follow in the third floor Book Arts Gallery. Price will offer her personal exploration of approaching content by attempting to merge with it. She will discuss concepts and practices of collaboration, chance, and craft in her work creating and publishing artist books. The event is sponsored by the Smith College Mortimer Rare Book Room, which has installed a companion exhibition, “Selected Works by Robin Price,” outside the rare book reading room on the third floor of Neilson Library.

Robin Price is an artist, editor, designer, letterpress printer, and publisher, who is passionate about making books and being nourished by others who share that passion. She often seeks out contemporary artists, writers, and artisans with whom to collaborate, striving for synergistic books and diversity in content and form. Her limited edition press books and unique work are collected and exhibited internationally. The 25th anniversary of her press was celebrated in 2010 with a retrospective exhibition, “Counting on Chance: 25 Years of Artists’ Books by Robin Price, Publisher,” at Wesleyan University Davison Art Center and the Columbia College Chicago Center for Book and Paper Arts. Based in Middletown, Connecticut, Price teaches an artist books class at Trinity College. She holds a B.A. from Pomona College. McGrath Lecture

The McGrath Lecture in Book Arts honors the memory of master printer Harold P. McGrath, (1921–2000). McGrath worked in the Northampton area as a letterpress printer for more than fifty years, including long stints with Leonard Baskin (Gehenna Press), Barry Moser (Pennyroyal Press), and Alan Robinson (Cheloniidae Press). He taught and inspired the next generation of book arts enthusiasts and practitioners—printers, bookbinders, papermakers, etc.—in this area and well beyond it.
