Neilson, Josten, and Hillyer Libraries, and Special Collections

Mysterious materials, historical artifacts, and musical offerings await at the first-ever Smith College Library Crawl!

Come roam around Hillyer Art Library, Josten Performing Arts Library, Neilson Library, and Special Collections. Meet your librarians, explore the spaces, and sample each location’s offerings – from an open-mic with live accompanist, to bookmark-making, to sneak peeks of our new zine collection and special treasures from Special Collections. The crawl will help you discover which library is YOU!

Grab a passport and make sure to get it stamped at each spot — collect a stamp at every library location and receive an exclusive (and colorful!) prize!

Take a peek at just a sampling of what each location has to offer:

Neilson Library (Browsing Room, first floor)

Make your own bookmark, get a book rec based on some of your childhood favorites, jam to some music, and learn all about the different library resources available to you as a Smithie!

Special Collections (Neilson Library, 304)

Come see political buttons from the 1960s, the Lesbian Avengers handbook, a 1909 Smithie scrapbook, a first edition of Virginia Woolf’s The Waves and so much more! Explore this student-curated display of unique and rare materials then pick up free postcards and stickers of items from the College Archives, Mortimer Rare Book Collection, and Sophia Smith Collection of Women’s History. Tours of the Special Collections stacks will be offered at 4 p.m. and 5 p.m. (limit six participants per tour due to elevator capacity).

Hillyer Art Library

Come be inspired by artists’ books, energized by our new zine collection, and surprised by mysterious materials from the locked stacks! The first floor classroom will be transformed into a makerspace for collage and zine making.

Josten Performing Arts Library

Sink into Josten’s music, theatre and dance collection, soulful purple carpet, and inspiring spaces for discovery– hidden in plain sight! Try out our mics (or borrow a ukulele) and perform with a live accompanist on the Mezzanine, 3-6 p.m. – Click here to sign up!

With so much to see and do, the Library Crawl is guaranteed to surprise and delight you!
