FY25 Libraries Budget Reductions

Smith College Libraries are working to meet the budget reduction for FY25. As 80% of the Libraries’ budget is committed to purchasing general collections, we are making choices about which resources we can continue to offer. We know how important the library is to our community. While the majority of our budget is tied to subscription resources like databases and journals, we are also reviewing other areas of spending to minimize cancellations.

Teaching

Faculty are encouraged to work with their librarian to identify alternative research databases and resources for students if the ones normally used are no longer available. Request library instruction online or by contacting your subject librarian.

Research

We are strongly committed to supporting teaching, learning and Smith faculty research. Please reach out to your subject librarian to find alternative resources to those that have been canceled.

Interlibrary Loan

Interlibrary Loan service (ILL) will remain fully available to you, and we are dedicated to facilitating your access to the materials you need through this service. If you have specific resource requirements or encounter any difficulties in accessing materials, please contact us at libraryhelp@smith.edu.

Feedback

We recognize that these budget cuts will have an impact across the Smith community, and welcome your thoughts, suggestions and feedback. Please email deanoflibraries@smith.edu with any questions or concerns. This email address will be monitored by the Library Leadership Team: Susan Fliss, Dean of Libraries; Jean Ferguson, Director of Learning, Research and Technology; Won Ha, Director of Public Services; Rob O’Connell, Director of Collections, Discovery and Systems; and Beth Myers, Director of Special Collections.

Collections Review & Cancellation Process

The Libraries' staff are reviewing data on the use of online collections and the cost for resources to inform decision-making for digital e-journals, databases, e-books and all other online materials.

  • In all cancellation decisions, we will prioritize teaching and learning followed by Smith faculty research.
  • As we determine cancellations, we are spreading them across all academic divisions.
  • We are working diligently to provide further details on budget decisions affecting the general collections and will provide updates on this web page.
