Nanci Young
College Archivist
Nanci is responsible for collecting materials that document the life of Smith College, and the undergraduate experience at Smith. She gives presentations on a wide variety of Smith topics to undergraduates, faculty, alumni, and Friends groups. Nanci works with faculty and students in classes ranging from American studies to Environmental studies, and everything in between. She spends some of her Friday afternoons at house teas; gives historical pep talks to sports teams; works to insert Smith history into orientation programs, and will pretty much talk to any group of two or more people who want to learn about Smith history. Oh yes, she’ll also talk with individuals—so look out!
Her professional papers and writings are on topics as diverse as, photography, collecting, appraisal of materials, Archives and the Internet; women’s friendships, and cultural aspects of College life at home and abroad. She honed her archival skills with positions at Yale, Princeton, the New York State Archives and several New England corporations before landing in Northampton.
When not in an archives, Nanci enjoys the outdoor life with her 2 children, 2 cats and 2 dogs (see a pattern?) in lovely Western Massachusetts.
