The Periodicals Collection in the Sophia Smith Collection includes over 1,500 titles of current and historical women's magazines, newspapers, newsletters, and other serials. Among these are Ladies' Companion (1840-44), Woman's Journal (1870-1916), Lucifer: The Light Bearer (1897-1901), Eugenesia (Mexico, 1943-45), Church Woman (1943-49) and Black Sash (South Africa, 1956-72). Early women's liberation periodicals, such as Shrew, Rat, and Velvet Fist are also well represented. There are approximately fifty current subscriptions. Older holdings range from full-runs to single issues for certain titles.

Girl Zines form part of the Periodicals Collection and consist of 9 linear feet (18 boxes) of small, self-published magazines (known as "zines") created primarily by young women and girls. The collection is comprised primarily of individual issues, mostly dating from the 1990s, and they share a strong feminist perspective. There is a separate finding aid for the Girl Zines.
Many of our periodicals are searchable in the Five College Libraries Catalog, by Journal title, or see the complete title list online.
