Due to the installation of new storm water collection structures in Neilson Drive at the intersection with Seelye Drive, there will be no motor vehicle thru-traffic possible from October 29 to November 8. Vehicles entering at John M. Greene gate must exit the same way. Vehicles entering at College Hall will continue to enter and exit as they now do. A walkway will be set up in advance around the work site to accommodate pedestrian, wheelchair and and bicycle traffic.
Veronika Schäpers delivers the annual McGrath Lecture in Contemporary Book Arts, Wednesday, October 31 at 5 p.m., Alumnae House Conference Hall. Veronika Schäpers is a German book artist who lived in Japan for 15 years. The Japanese culture and aesthetics have fascinated and influenced her ever since, leaving marks in almost all of her projects. In her talk she will explain her conceptual way of making artist books and also show a selection of her books that are part of Smith’s Mortimer Rare Book Collection.

Dean of the College and Vice President for Campus Life Susan Etheredge ‘77 will moderate the panel. A reception and book-signing will follow. A remarkable collection of letters, documents, movies and other material documenting the life of acclaimed actor and activist Jane Fonda is now open for research through Smith College’s Sophia Smith Collection.
There are several large chunks of concrete left over from previous demolition work that must be broken into pieces to be hauled away. Since the work will be noisy, it is scheduled for Monday, October 8 to avoid scheduled classes. Work will take place on Burton Lawn, begin around 8 a.m. and complete mid-day.

Young closes at 6 p.m. on Friday, and is open 10-5 on Saturday and Sunday. Hillyer, Josten, and Special Collections are closed Saturday-Sunday. All Smith library locations are closed Monday, October 8 for Fall Break.
