Learn about the concentration and meet the faculty, Wednesday, October 10, at 5 p.m. in the Dewey Common Room. Refreshments will be served.

The Book Studies Concentration connects students with the history and culture of material texts in the Mortimer Rare Book Collection (and the rest of Special Collections) and to book scholars, book artists, and craftspeople of the Pioneer Valley. Through classroom study, field projects, and independent research, you learn about the history, art, and technologies of the book, broadly defined to extend from oral memory to scrolls, printed books to digital media.

Book studies concentrators design capstone projects in a wide variety of areas, including medieval manuscripts, early printing, book illustration, children's picture books, the book trade, artists' books, censorship, the history of publishing, the social history of books and literacy, histories of libraries and book collecting, and transformations of material text in today's digital realms.
